Contents: The article describes the theory oftlicrmally coupling buildings to the subsoil under them in order to exploit the earth's annual absorption of solar energ): In effect, low-rise buildings can function as inverted caves, it is suggested. In the application of the concept to a two-storey house, a radiant floor storage arrangement links a water-source heat pump and a modest solar array to supplement a 'natural' winter base temperature of 11-12°C.
