Contents: Misawa Homes is one of the largest producers of industrialised housing in Japan. Here, members of its Research and Development Institute consider durability performance from a manufacturing viewpoint. The 'Misawa Home 55' system is a box-unit system based on a non-structural precast autoclaved lightweight concrete panel in which the surface finishing is important to the performance over time of the whole system. Waterproofing is achieved by impregnating the panel during manufacture with low-molecular polyurethane resin which forms a high-molecular resistant layer 1-2 mm from the surface after curing. An acrylic masonry coating is then applied, also in the factory. The article describes the process of selecting the coating system, and the surveys and tests to validate compatibility and performance.
