The relationship of gratification in the maternal role to maternal variables (age, self-rated performance in the role, role strain, educational level, readiness for pregnancy, previous experience in caring for infants, and mate relationship) among three age groups of first-time mothers (N = 43, 15-19 year olds; N = 119, 20-29 year olds; N = 88, 30-42 year olds) was studied at 8 months postbirth. Within the teenage group, no significant correlations were found between gratification in mothering and the maternal variables. Within the 20- to 29-year-old group the higher the gratification in the mothering role, the higher the self-rating in the role, the lower the role strain, the greater the readiness for pregnancy and the more positive the mate relationship. Within the 30 and older group, the greater the gratification the older the age, the higher the self-rating in performance, the lower the educational level, and the greater the previous experience in caring for infants.
