Social support has been associated with both adjustment to pregnancy and pregnancy and infant complications. To identify the important components of support in prenatal populations, a study was undertaken to examine expressive support (general and pregnancy support) and instrumental support. Three hundred and eleven (311) prenatal patients were interviewed during both the fourth month and eighth month of pregnancy regarding expressive and instrumental support in relation to alcohol consumption during pregnancy. Pregnancy support was found to be the most important support component in accounting for the variance in alcohol consumption, using standard regression techniques. This association would have been missed if pregnancy support had been combined with general support as a single measure of expressive support, as these two support components were working in opposite directions, with pregnancy support protecting against alcohol consumption while general support encouraged drinking. Loss of the father of the baby as an additional dimension of pregnancy support was also found to be a significant independent contributor to the variance in alcohol consumption. These findings suggest the importance of measuring pregnancy-specific support in any study concerned with an analysis of social support in prenatal populations. |
