Title: Sexually transmitted diseases in children
Author: Whitner, Michael S.
Anderson, Mollie V.
Appeared in: Health care for women international
Paging: Volume 8 (1987) nr. 1 pages 9-18
Year: 1987
Contents: Sexually transmitted diseases in children are increasing in frequency. The epidemiology of these diseases divides pediatric patients into three conventional groups; infancy, childhood, and adolescense. The majority of occurrences in infancy are due to exposue in utero or contact during parturition. Occurrences of sexually transmitted diseases in children and adolescents should be presumed to be the result of sexual abuse until proven otherwise. In this article the authors look at four case histories of children with diagnosed STD in an attempt to help the practitioner grasp the scope of the problem. We as health care providers must be wiling to entertain the possibility that abuse does exist. Resolution of child abuse starts with its recognition.
