Perceived threat of hypothetical loss of body part in nurses and nursing students

Titel: Perceived threat of hypothetical loss of body part in nurses and nursing students
Auteur: Damrosch, Shirley Petchel
Verschenen in: Health care for women international
Paginering: Jaargang 9 (1988) nr. 4 pagina's 305-315
Jaar: 1988
Inhoud: A survey of 124 female baccalaureate nursing students (mean age 23 years) and 69 female registered nurses (mean age 31 years) focused on which part of their bodies would be most psychologically distressful for them to lose. Respondents answered this question in two ways: by means of open-ended responses and then by selection from an alphabetized list. Limb(s), eye(s), and tongue were the most frequent choices for both groups of subjects. When queried about which loss would be least psychologically distressful for them, subjects in both groups most frequently named uterus (50% of nursing students and 78% of nurses). Uterus was the modal response although only 7 % of the students and 35 % of the nurses had children. Implications of these findings are discussed in the context of body image, women's changing roles, and patient care.
