  'RECEIVING INSIDERS' AND 'STRANGER CLIENTS'

Title: 'RECEIVING INSIDERS' AND 'STRANGER CLIENTS'
Author: Argyle, John
Appeared in: Indonesia and the Malay world
Paging: Volume 36 (2008) nr. 105 pages 219-233
Year: 2008-07
Contents: Stranger kings in Africa are considered as examples of James Fox's 'returning outsiders'. Material collected among small chiefdoms in Zambia records instances of outsiders appearing in recent historical contexts, as well as more distant periods. A corresponding category is proposed of 'receiving insiders' whose actions are crucial for the sucess of the returning outsiders. The results of this analysis are briefly extended to the origins of the Zulu historical figures, Dingiswayo and Shaka. Not previously characterised as stranger-kings nor as returning outsiders, they too were intially dependent on receiving insiders. East African cases of stranger-kings are briefly noted, some of whose typifying attributes are replicated in what are here called 'stranger-clients'. Finally, the categories of returning outsiders and receiving insiders are shown operating at the level of former slaves in central Africa.
