Title: Technoeconomic Indicators Pertinent to Environmental Management in Metal Forging Industry
Author: Defrawy, N.M. El

Year: 2002
Contents: Effluents from metal forging industry are characterized by significant concentrations of heavy metals and cyanides which normally exceed allowable discharge limits. Pickling and electroplating processes are considered the principal generators of hazardous waste in this industry. This paper addresses development of upgraded environmental management practices in a metal forging plant located south of Cairo with the aim to establish an adequate pollution control system. Current pollution loads have been assessed with respect to quantity and characteristics. Optional environmental management systems have been proposed and compared, based on treatability studies and relevant technoeconomic grounds. The selected scheme encompassed chemical precipitation using lime for the treatment of pickling effluents. Zinc electroplating effluents are proposed to be treated through alkaline chlorination. Drying ponds are the proposed solution for the drying of sludges. The estimated average treatment cost for the combined flows is about L.E. 0.72/m 3 .
