Contents: This research examines the effect of acids on a colloidal suspension of bentonite particles in distilled water. Decreasing the pH of the suspension chemically transformed the molecular structure of the bentonite by dissolution. This reaction was reflected in increases in the electrical conductivity of the solution. To describe the corrosion process, a new constant known as a positive corrosion constant was introduced. Four different positive corrosion constants were identified during the corrosion of bentonite in the suspension system. In addition, this research also develops a numerical model which predicts the pollutant migration through a bentonite liner subject to corrosion. The model is based on the chemical reaction between bentonite and the H+ ion. The calculated corrosion constants may prove useful in calibrating the developed numerical model for pollutant migration through a bentonite liner undergoing corrosion.
